1099 WI Electronic File Extension Fix

1099 WI Electronic File Extension Fix

The state of Wisconsin only accepts electronic 1099 files with the ".txt" extension at the end of the file name.  When this file is created in Connect, it is missing this extension.  As a result, the ".txt" extension needs to manually be added.

To add the extension to the file name, please follow these steps:
  1. Open File Explorer.
  2. Navigate to the file path/directory in which the 1099 electronic file was created in step 13 of the Connect Account Payable Calendar Year-End Checklist.
  3. Right click on the file with the ".WI" extension (e.g. ORIG._____._____.WI) and select Edit in Notepad.
  4.  Once the file opens in Notepad, click on File | Save as.
  5. You may rename the file with a different file name if you wish.  The main thing is to make sure the Save as type: field says "Text documents (*.txt)".
  6. Click Save.
Use this new file to submit to the WI Department of Revenue.
